Hi–I’m Mary Elaine Kiener, the “ME” of ASK ME House.
I live in a lovely, nearly century-old house that had gotten used to having a variety of people visit throughout the years I’ve lived here. And nearly every one of our visitors comments on the house’s ambiance–and how it evokes nostalgic memories–which oftentimes are not even related to THIS house.
While my husband, Alex (the “ASK” of ASK ME House), was still alive, the house joined us for nearly a decade in welcoming “bed and breakfast” guests. We had also garnered a bit of a reputation for hosting wonderful “front porch suppers” in the summertime.
Plus, the dining room–with its pocket doors and hand-painted mural is such an inviting place to sit and enjoy a meal.
As Alex’s health declined, we stopped the bed and breakfast operation. Then, after his death, I took a long sabbatical from my own work and even considered giving up the house–feeling that perhaps it was more than I could handle on my own.
In 2006, however, fate intervened, and it became clear that I truly loved this house, and couldn’t quite bear to leave it. And I believe the feeling was mutual. Plus, Alex, who had always said he was my silent partner, still seems to maintain a supportive presence here.
So, we’ve found a way to all play together. I hope you’ll join us!
